PlayStation Chief: “no discussion of a next generation PlayStation for quite some time”

9/1/11

It seems that the PS3 will have to soldier on before it’s successor is announced. In an interview with Forbes, Sony PlayStation head honcho Jack Tretton stated that gamers will not likely see the next iteration of the PlayStation. The PlayStation Chief says that “PlayStation 3 is really just hitting its stride. And technologically, I don’t think it’s possible to provide any advancement beyond what we have. What we’ve seen from the competition is trying to add features that already exist in PlayStation 3.” That last quip may have been directed at the Nintendo and the recently launched Wii U,which some believe will be more powerful than the existing PS3. He also adds that, “We invested heavily in that, we rolled a very heavy rock up a steep hill, through the launch period. But now I think that all pays off, and we’ve got a long run way behind it.”
It’ll be interesting to see this play out, as Sony’s longtime console rival, Microsoft, is rumored to be planning to release the successor to the XBOX360 at next year’s E3.

Nintendo announces Wii U, awesomeness ensues

8/30/11
While we were unable to go to E3 this year (you can blame that on the 5,000 mile divide) we’re still able to follow the multiple reveals via the series of tubes we call the internet. One of the biggest announcements to come out today was the Wii U, Nintendo’s successor to the massively successful Wii. The Wii U features a 6.2-inch touchscreen in the middle along with the traditional buttons and d-pads that consoles have. The unit will have an accelerometer, is totally backwards-compatible with old Wii titles and has built-in camera that allows some facetime-esque chat functionality. A neat feature is the devices’ ability to continue a game on the touchscreen when someone uses the TV that’s being used. Speaking of TVs, the Wii U will beam the game images straight on to your boob-tube without the use of wires, and will be in HD. There’s so many gameplay possibilities with the new console that it’s really hard to begin to fathom, but if the Wii is anything to go by, it’s probably going be awesome and fun.
